Phonological Restructuring in Yidi ̄ and its Theoretical Consequences

چکیده

Detailed study of data in Dixon’s (1977) grammar indicates that previous analyses of Yidī have erred in supposing that the synchronic pattern of the language continues the historical pattern, whereby various nominal stems have their underlying final vowels deleted when no suffix follows. Instead, it appears that the system has undergone a radical reanalysis, whereby the suffixed forms are now projectable by general principles from the isolation forms. More precisely, a pattern of multiple predictability has developed: the form of suffixed allomorphs is largely predictable from the isolation allomorphs, but the older pattern, whereby isolation allomorphs can be predicted from the suffixed allomorphs, also persists. From this descriptive result, three principal theoretical consequences are developed: (a) Yidī possesses a fully-productive pattern of alternation that is not driven by markedness-faithfulness interactions; (b) the phonological constraints that are active in Yidī likely include some that are quite unlikely to be members of a universal inventory; (c) there are more relations of predictability among surface forms in Yidī than can be treated by the normal method, namely that of deriving all the surface allomorphs from a single underlying representation. A tentative suggestion is made for how Optimality Theory might be extended to treat cases of this sort, by means of a class of “Anticorrespondence” constraints. Prosodic and intonational domains in speech synthesis

An intonational domain corresponds to the part of an utterance spanned by one intonation contour. We lay out a theory of intonational domains that is rooted in intonational (autosegmental) phonology and prosodic phonology. We focus on restructuring—the process that joins two intonational domains together to form a single domain. We report on a perception experiment about restructuring involving...

Exploring the Relationship Between Phonological Awareness and Reading Ability: From Elementary Teachers’ Perspectives

The present study investigated the way elementary school teachers perceive the importance of phonological awareness in their classroom experiences. To achieve the aim, 75 elementary school teachers of both genders with diverse years of experience and qualifications from 25 elementary schools in Khorram Abad, Iran were selected. In order to obtain the data, the modified version of the Likert-typ...

Relations among socioeconomic status, age, and predictors of phonological awareness.

PURPOSE This study simultaneously examined predictors of phonological awareness within the framework of 2 theories: the phonological distinctness hypothesis and the lexical restructuring model. Additionally, age as a moderator of the relations between predictor variables and phonological awareness was examined. METHOD This cross-sectional quantitative study included a total of 700 participant...

Phonological Awareness and its implications for Reading Acquisition

Researches of more than two decades has affirmed the importance of phonological awareness and its relation to reading acquisition. Chard & Dickson (1999) consider phonological awareness as a "cognitive substrate to reading acquisition" (p.1). This article explains Phonological awareness and its relation to reading acquisition.
